Advice on preparing for your first driving lesson

People can often be nervous when they are going for their first driving lesson. It is an intimidating experience, driving a car properly for the first time while under the close watch of the instructor. It can be easy to get flustered and not perform as well as you like.

Not knowing what to expect is normally the main reason for this feeling and you will soon learn after starting the lesson that it is not as hard as you initially thought. Once you have found a good instructor, you will have no problems at all. Their whole profession is dealing with inexperienced drivers such as you and they have seen it all before. They will be able to carefully navigate you through the lessons, improving your driving skills along the way.

Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind when preparing for your first driving lesson at a place like Roadwise Driver Training.

Refresh your memory

Going into your initial lesson, you want to be as prepared as possible so you have a reasonable idea as to what you are supposed to be doing. If you haven't driven much before, you should refresh your memory of the rules of the road and ensure that you know what all of the road signs and traffic lights mean. You should also prepare a list of questions or queries that you may have and would like to ask the instructor. You are taking the lessons in order to improve your driving skills so you want to be constantly progressing and analysing where you went wrong and what areas you can improve on.

Common drills for first time driving lessons

There are a few common drills and exercises the instructor will have you complete if it is your first driving lesson.

The cockpit drill involves the instructor going through each component of the car that is necessary to driving, explaining what they do and how they operate. This will help you grasp where everything is and know how to use the specific vehicle.

This is not a test, you are encouraged to ask questions and gain new knowledge. You will be then asked to operate all of the controls yourself so they know that you are comfortable with where everything is located.

Some first lessons do not have any actual driving in them; it is mainly a preparation lesson. If this is not the case, you will then proceed to moving the car off and stopping. The instructor will tell you what exactly to do and you simply follow their instructions to drive off and then park when a suitable spot presents itself.
